The Magic of Silkscreening
Silkscreen printing, also known as screen printing, is a versatile and dynamic technique that allows artists to create vibrant, textured artworks by layering various materials onto a surface. This process involves pushing ink through a fine mesh screen onto a substrate, such as paper or fabric, using a squeegee. The true magic of silkscreening lies in its adaptability, enabling the incorporation of unique elements like gold leaf, neon inks, and glitter to enhance the visual appeal of each piece.
The Silkscreening Process
At its core, silkscreening starts with designing an image or pattern, which is then transferred onto a mesh screen. The areas not meant to be printed are blocked off, creating a stencil. Ink is then applied to the screen and pressed through the open areas onto the chosen surface. This method allows for multiple layers, each potentially introducing a new color or effect, resulting in a rich and complex final image.
Incorporating Gold Leaf
Adding gold leaf to a print introduces a luxurious and eye-catching element. After printing the desired design, adhesive is applied to the areas where the gold leaf will be placed. Once the adhesive becomes tacky, delicate sheets of gold leaf are carefully laid onto the surface. Excess gold leaf is then brushed away, revealing a shimmering accent that adds depth and elegance to the artwork. This meticulous process requires patience and precision but results in a stunning, high-quality finish.
Utilising Neon Inks
Neon inks, also known as fluorescent inks, are used to create vibrant, eye-catching colors that stand out under natural and UV light. These inks contain pigments that emit visible light, resulting in bright, glowing hues. In silkscreening, neon inks are applied similarly to standard inks but require careful handling to maintain their brightness and ensure even application. The use of neon inks can infuse a piece with energy and modernity, making it visually striking.
Adding Glitter for Sparkle
Incorporating glitter into a print adds a playful and dynamic element. This can be achieved by mixing glitter particles into a clear or coloured ink and then applying it through the screen onto the substrate. Alternatively, a layer of adhesive can be printed, followed by sprinkling glitter onto the sticky areas. Once set, the excess glitter is removed, leaving behind a sparkling design. This technique adds texture and shine, making the artwork catch and reflect light in captivating ways.
The Art of Hand-Finishing
Hand-finishing is a crucial aspect of the silkscreening process, especially when incorporating elements like gold leaf, neon inks, and glitter.

Behind the Art: The Creative Process from Photography to Print
Creating art is an incredible journey, and each print I produce has its own unique story. Today, I’d love to give you a behind-the-scenes look at my process, from the initial photograph to the final hand-finished details that make every piece truly one-of-a-kind.
1. The Spark: Photography as the Foundation
Every piece begins with a photograph. Whether I’m capturing the raw energy of a live performance or the quiet beauty of a natural landscape, my goal is to catch something authentic. Music often guides these moments, helping me frame each shot with emotion and movement. Through the lens, I capture what feels genuine and inspiring, creating the foundation for what will soon become a transformed piece of art.
